A minor musical miracle took place in Brooklyn, New York in 1962-the birth of the a cappella singing group known as The Persuasions. No member was originally from Brooklyn. Four of the five were still teenagers and products of the black migration northward that came into full gear during the 1950’s. As southerners, they brought with them their strong gospel and R & B influences to combine with the doo-wop, Motown and other sounds more popular in the north to create a virtual a cappella orchestra. The Persuasions sing every type of music, from the Lord’s Prayer to Frank Zappa, From Sam Cooke to Elvis Presley, all in their own inimitable style. Because they defy categorization, they are often misrepresented as a doo-wop group, although this has never constituted more than 10-15%of their repertoire, which consists of over a thousand songs!
