Mustangs and Madras of Longmont, Colorado, is a band that has existed for roughly four years. Its five members grew up in the same small, sleepy town, and most of them still sleep there. Denver, however, is the city they call home—that’s where the majority of their performances occur. Denver’s independent punk music scene has more or less flourished now for over a decade. Mustangs and Madras find it an honor to participate in it. The bands in this rather eclectic scene are all unique, and in this respect Mustangs and Madras is no exception. Drawing influences from such classic acts as Braid, At the Drive-In, Fugazi, Hum, and newer bands like Isis and 31 Knots, Mustangs’ live performances generate an intensity many find quite refreshing. This energy seeps into their recordings as well. Of the first Mustangs and Madras EP, recorded and self-released in 2003, Dave Herrera wrote: “ Emo’s not dead; it’s just been really boring and unlistenable since ‘97. Enter Mustangs and Madras, whose latest platter is a throwback to the Sunny Days before screamo, when Kids used to actually Get Up and rock.” Their most current recording, “La Lechuza,” sparks similar praise: Who knew that Longmont could churn out such stellar and impassioned musicians? Le Lechuza rocks that mid-’90s post-whatever sound that culls influence from locally popular Midwestern acts such as Ricky Fitts, Ten Grand and Shiner. It’s impetuous and smart, but never undermining. Damn, L-town, you did good.” – Tuyet Nguyen (Westword) Mustangs and Madras have completed a hand full of US tours, and are currently preparing for a 2-week European tour to take place this spring. “La Lechuza” is set to release May 29, 2007 by Latest Flame Records.
