Artist WebsiteLow is a trio from Duluth, Minnesota, who make very slow music. That’s not the only thing there is to their music, or even the most important thing, but it’s what you’ll notice first. Low plays songs stripped to their bare essentials: slow tempos, quiet voices, powerful lyrics, and minimal instrumentations.
Low, which could be described as “Joy Division meets Simon & Garfunkel”, has four full-length albums and a handful of EPs and singles, first released by Vernon Yard Records and more recently by Kranky Records. Guitarist/singer Alan Sparhawk and percussionist/singer Mimi Parker formed Low in 1993 with bassist John Nichols, partly as an experiment in playing quiet, minimalistic music. Zak Sally, a friend of Alan and Mimi’s, became the band’s permanent bass player in 1994.
One of their earliest fans was New York producer Kramer, who recorded their first two albums. Low spent much of 1995 and 1996 touring with bands like Soul Coughing, Luna, and Spectrum. When they toured with Pell Mell, they got to know keyboardist and producer Steve Fisk, and they later chose to work with him on The Curtain Hits The Cast. Low’s fourth and fifth albums, Secret Name and Things We Lost in the Fire, were recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini.
The music is based in part on the harmonies of Alan and Mimi, which are accompanied with sparse sounds—guitar, bass, and a simple drum set. Low makes music in which the spaces between notes are as important as the notes themselves, and perhaps even more so. In the end, though, words cannot do the music justice.
