Light Travels Faster redefine the avant-garde. These progressive indie rockers deliver melodic masterpieces with an undeniable contempt for convention. In their latest EP After the black of Baca County, Light Travels Faster create lush and vivid soundscapes ornamented with thought provoking, abstract lyrics. These multi-movement and often experimental songs flow with a story-like quality, allowing the entire album to be fresh and exciting with each listen. But regardless of the sound, the unfailing truth is LIGHT TRAVELS FASTER. For fans of: Pixies, Modest Mouse, Sonic Youth. Where did LTF come from? Well, the project started out in Amarillo Texas. After it’s time in Amarillo was done, everyone went their seperate ways. There is an unspecified amount of time where nobody really knows what they were doing. It is a mystery to this day. Then….out of nowhere….LTF was brought back to life in Denver Colorado. With this new start came the addition of Todd on Bass. They still didn’t have a drummer as Kyle (the original LTF drummer) still lived in Texas. The search for a new drummer was slow and uneventfull. Many phone calls and emails to Kyle were made in hopes he would move up to Denver. Then there were more phone calls and emails. Kyle finally decided to pack up his bags and move to Colorado. The band was once again in place. LTF hopes to electrify listeners everywhere with their fresh approach and songcraft. Keep and eye out for shows in Denver and beyond. There is a new EP in the works so watch for that! Recent review in Westword Light Travels Faster After the Black of Baca County By Michael Roberts Published: October 4, 2007 Subject(s): Light Travels Faster As its moniker implies, Light Travels Faster, which recently moved to Denver from Amarillo, Texas, isn’t in a hurry. The latest EP by guitarist/vocalist Christopher Rigel and percussionist Kyle Fuller (recently joined by bassist Todd Spriggs) refuses to rush, championing long-term atmosphere over short-term impact. “A Broadcast of Natural Resonance,” the opening cut, is an aural collage that juxtaposes simulated radio chatter with ambient guitar and declamatory vocals. “Where the Universe Ends…,” which follows, boasts more traditional bash-n-clash passages, but these sections wouldn’t work nearly as well were it not for quieter moments before and after the storm. Likewise, the languid “Preface to the Stars” effectively sets the stage for “Everyday,” an opus that builds toward chaos rather than exploding at the outset. The only debit here is “Baca County, CO,” which sticks to the beaten path. The men of Light Travels Faster sound better when they go their own way and take their sweet time reaching a destination. Oct.11 2007 The Metropolitan Review by Jeremy Johnson LIGHT TRAVELS FASTER If anything travels faster than light in the music world, it’s word of mouth. And with that (and some glowing critiques by the local press), Light Travels Faster has begun to make a glowing impression, like an image pressed into the back of eyelids after staring directly at the sun. LTF (Christopher Rigel on lead guitar and vocals, Todd Spriggs on bass and Kyle Fuller on drums) label themselves as “indie” o their myspace page, but manage to branch out from the ambiguous and generic classification with wildly varying compositions and tempos, combined with killer bass contortions and grating guitar distortion. The result is a sound similar to Sonic Youth meets Modest Mouse, without all the fancy lyrical and melodic pretenses of both. Instead, Rigel’s pre-pubescent screech relays the raw realities of an array of fluctuating emotions, seconded by the compositional tranquilities of Sprigg’s sly bass and the juxtaposing animosity of Fuller’s deathly drums. With their far-out and mystical, musical message, Light Travels Faster could be light years ahead of Denver’s otherwise dulled down cosmic sounds. Light Travels Faster, After the Black of Baca County (No Dance Records). Light Travels Faster is all about atmosphere. Numbers such as “A Broadcast of Natural Resonance,” which is more of a soundscape than a song, and the shimmering “Preface to the Stars” use rudimentary instrumentation to eerily captivating effect, while “Everyday” juxtaposes crashing and bashing with guitar tones that evoke the hi-lo country. — Roberts
